Of all the cruise ports in the southern Caribbean, San Juan is one of the easiest to explore, due to the close proximity of the piers to the city’s many attractions and historic sites. Most cruise ships dock right in Old San Juan, while a handful of them make the nearby Pan American Pier their stopping-off point.
On one of the many interesting walking tours offered along the blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, you
can learn about the history of the city and the island, including the exploits of Puerto Rico’s first governor, Ponce de Leon, whose statue stands just outside a 16th-century Church of San José. The San Juan National Historic Site, which includes Castillo de San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal, is a much-visited UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Spoon Experience tour tells the story of the island’s history and architecture through its food, while the Art Walk takes in the colourful murals of La Calle Cerra in the Santurce district.
Don’t forget about the rum: both the Bacardi Rum Factory and Ron del Barrilito offer tours and tastings showcasing Puerto Rico’s heavenly distillation heritage. And Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra is a sun-filled day trip via catamaran to one of the top-rated stretches of sand in the world.
