We had the pleasure of sitting down with Captain Birger Vorland of Crystal Serenity to uncover his favorite memories, personal travel tips, and what makes sailing with Crystal an experience like no other.
What drew you to Crystal — and what keeps you here?
Without hesitation, it’s the crew. Crystal’s crew members are unmatched in warmth, attentiveness, and commitment. There’s a true sense of pride in being part of such a revered travel institution. Many of our accolades and loyal guests can be attributed to this exceptional onboard team — I’ve never experienced this depth of dedication anywhere else in my maritime career.
What are your most unforgettable moments as captain?
The World Cruises are incredibly special — not only for their rare and remote destinations, but also for the sense of community they foster. Guests proudly refer to themselves as “World Cruisers,” and the energy on board during those voyages is something truly extraordinary. Personally, I cherish the extra time I have to connect with guests during these sailings. Hearing their stories and sharing real conversations is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.
What are your top five destinations to sail into aboard Crystal Serenity?
As a mariner, the arrival is everything. That first visual connection with a destination leaves a lasting impression. Iconic cities like New York, Sydney, Stockholm, Hong Kong, and Rio de Janeiro top my list — their legendary harbors create a profound sense of arrival. Sailing past the Statue of Liberty or into Sydney Harbour never gets old — it’s magic every time.
How do you immerse yourself in a destination — and what tips do you have for guests?
I always say: do as the locals do. For me, that means finding a local café, ordering a coffee, and watching the city breathe. There’s no better way to feel a destination than simply being present in its rhythm. Which new dining venue on board are you most excited about?
I can’t wait to revisit Umi Uma, our signature Nobu-created restaurant — it’s a one-of-a-kind experience at sea. Also, the newly introduced Tastes restaurant — a tapas-style concept with seasonal and regionally inspired dishes — promises to be a standout. Across the board, the revitalized dining program reflects a refined yet relaxed approach to luxury cuisine, aligned with Crystal’s elevated standards.
What are your top five can’t-miss experiences aboard Crystal Serenity?
