Sri Lanka Luxury Cruises
Disarmingly diverse, the pearl-shaped island nation of Sri Lanka is filled with ancient temples, botanical gardens, tea plantations and tropical landscapes.
The Sri Lankan coastline’s multiple marine environs offer coral reefs and shallow coastal beds, nearly 40 lagoons and a mangrove ecosystem that stretches for almost 20,000 acres. Luxury cruises here hit the largest city of Colombo, the commercial heart of the country, drinking in its colonial architecture and modern street life. Visitors head to historic Gangaramaya Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country, and to see the lavish murals at Asokaramaya Temple. The pretty Pettah Market is perfect for local delicacies and spot-on souvenirs, and combing the antiquities and exhibits at Colombo National Museum, which opened in
1877, is an afternoon well-spent.
Shore excursions to the interior take cruise-ship wanderers to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where 25 acres of coconut grove shelter the greatest herd in captivity, and to the tea plantations of Ingiriya, where you can deep-dive into
the tea production process.
Elsewhere along the coast, the city of Negombo is anchored to a lagoon of the same name just north of Colombo, replete with ornate churches, tranquil temples and a 17th-century fort to explore. And to the south, the old fortified city in the town of Galle is even older, it’s 16th-century stone walls awaiting your touch.
