“Insulae de los Galopegos” – the Islands of the Tortoises – is a nature-lovers dream. This adventure of a lifetime presents countless opportunities for wildlife watching – marine and land iguanas, giant tortoises, fur seals and sea lions, plus blue-footed boobies, penguins, cormorants, finches and frigatebirds.
The 13 main islands are Baltra, Española, Fernandina, Floreana, Genovesa, Isabela, Marchena, Pinta, Pinzon, San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe and Santiago. Most cruises start in Santa Cruz. Summer months are the busiest, but seas are calmer December through May, which is also the rainy season.
Private luxury yachts here allow for high-style comfort while delivering fantastic itineraries led by the world’s top naturalists. Small-ship cruises on 40- to 100-passenger vessels (the largest allowed) are nimble enough to see you in and around the islands, getting right to the heart of the wilderness.
Your expedition will not only see you exploring the fascinating wildlife that has thrived on this exotic equatorial island grouping for centuries, but also enjoying the active adventure – diving, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking and surfing… volunteering, too: helping with habitat restoration and marine conservation can also be a part of your cruise programme.
