Nature puts on a splendid show in the north of Botswana, where the Okavango Delta, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, impresses everyone who visits. The sheer volume of animals and the variety of species is the richest on the continent. Covering one-third of this inland delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is dense with wildlife from the dry savannah to the marshy wetlands, across 3,000 square miles. Spiritual respite can be found in the Tsodilo Hills in the northwest corner of the country, home to 4,500 cave paintings more than 20,000 years old.
In Botswana’s northeast, Chobe National Park is well known for its massive elephant population across 7,000 square miles – as well as for its fly-in luxury lodges. Botswana’s very first national park also presents opportunities for viewing hippos, rare antelopes, and more than 400 species of birds. Large salt pans in the middle of dry savannah make up Makgadikgadi and Naxi Pans National Park, covering 2,400 square miles. Dozens of forest reserves and wildlife conservation areas attract many annual visitors, who favor the luxury lodges on the banks of the Boteti River nearby.
To the south, the Kalahari Desert, with its fossil river valleys and swaying grasses, is the site of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Khutse Game Reserve, protected grasslands that are home to big cats, antelopes, and giraffes. And within the red sand dunes and grasslands of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, visitors find an abundance of lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas, along with many species of migratory birds.
