The Best Time to Visit Portugal

By Tully Luxury Travel | 03-12-2024 |

Private Travel Portugal

Portugal has always been considered one of Europe’s more even-tempered treasures – more sensible than France, less dramatic than Italy, just as delicious as Spain. And yet, luxury vacations to Portugal are still so full of history and so culturally engaging, that those who visit once very often find themselves returning again and again.

In general, particularly with regard to family vacations, high season in Portugal is the first brush many have with this fascinating country on the Iberian coast. The summer months bustle with beach resorts and boat tours, summer festivals and outdoor fun. The Atlantic Ocean is actually swimmable in July and August.

Time your visit with Portugal’s shoulder seasons

The best months to visit Portugal are inarguably the “shoulder months” during spring and fall, which are devoid of both summer crowds and the prices that follow them around. Portugal travel itineraries take full advantage of the fact that there is incredible outdoor adventure to be had at these times of year, when it’s not too hot to enjoy things like hiking and biking.

The spring months of April and May – even early June – are the absolute best months to visit Portugal, an ideal time of year. Reason being? The whole country is in bloom, as both the cities and the rural areas have just shaken off the winter. With average temps reaching 60º to 75º during this time, visitors are assured plenty of sunny days. The spring is also a good time to take in cultural and religious festivities that see the communities embracing their heritage.

Fall is also one of the best seasons to visit Portugal. From mid-September through October is the perfect time to see all the sights, and get in on summer-like temperatures – minus the summer crowds. Anyone interested in wine-tasting will have a wonderful autumn in Portugal, taking in crush time in the renowned Douro River valley wine regions. Madeira luxury vacations also manage to entice visitors with the promise of unique wine experiences throughout this Atlantic Ocean island getaway.

Don’t discount a winter trip to Portugal

While November and December may not be on your list for Europe, you’d be surprised how many people visit the southern coast of Portugal. The Algarve region is pleasant and sunny during this time, while most of Europe is seeing rain and lower temperatures. This is where the rest of Portugal goes to relax – winter and summer. The Algarve is overflowing with soft, sandy beaches, mosaic-tiled streets, drowsy fishing villages and interesting luxury accommodations, particularly the Eastern Algarve. On the western side, visitors will be inspired by the dramatic landscapes of rugged cliffs and geological limestone oddities.

Whatever season you visit Portugal, a trip to Lisbon will no doubt be part of the agenda. Once again, off-season is when you will connect with the city the most. Find a quiet moment in one of the charming neighborhood squares or from one of the breathtaking “miradors” throughout town, and simply drink in the view.
