Laton Leparan, one of our Travel Designers, embodied this motto on a recent trip to northern Kenya. He brought a local Samburu man, Sonkoi Lemaruru, his family and others a surprise: rechargeable Luci Inflatable Solar Lights. These small, lightweight, easyto-pack, waterproof, solar-powered lights shine up to 18 hours on a single charge.
Laton, why bring Luci lights?
Laton: Sonkoi and his family, and many of the Samburu, live in huts without electricity. Even during the day, it’s pitch black inside.
How do they see?
Laton: They use fire or a paraffin lamp, but the smoke stings their eyes, and there’s a risk of burns. We thought two Luci lights would make their lives safer and a little easier.
What was their reaction?
In Sonkoi’s words: “We are very happy and appreciate having been given the solar lights. The children use the lights to do homework at night – they don’t have to rush and finish it before it gets dark anymore. When my wife wakes up at 5 am to prepare the children for school, it’s just a matter of turning on the lights. She no longer has to look for matchboxes to use paraffin lights. The lights have helped my wife a great deal because when I am at work at night, and she needs to check on the cows and goats (maybe one is giving birth, or sick), she uses the lights. We can now cook at night and enjoy dinners together as a family because of the lights.”
How does that make you feel?
Laton: The Luci lights are a simple gift, yet they made a huge impact on the families that received them. I am so happy I had the opportunity to see it firsthand. About the Luci Light
The Luci Light measures 5 in x 4.25 in when fully inflated and stores conveniently at 5 in x 1 in when deflated for easy packing while in travel.
The internal battery lasts up to 18 hours on a full charge and takes about 7 hours to charge under direct sunlight and has a lifespan of 18-22 months.
